Gymnastics to face four-time defending champion Georgia

The only two gymnasts who have recorded perfect 10s in the sport across the nation this season, UCLA’s Vanessa Zamarripa and Georgia’s Courtney Kupets, will compete for their teams in Pauley Pavilion on Sunday.

No. 6 UCLA hosts top-ranked Georgia.

The much-anticipated meet is set for a 2 p.m. start time.

The No. 1 Gym Dogs have won all 10 of their meets, while No. 6 UCLA has dropped meets to then-No. 1 Utah and a talented Nebraska team two weeks ago.

The Bruins’ record stands at 10-2.

UCLA is coming off a win in Corvallis against Oregon State, a meet in which the Bruins needed a score of 9.775 on the balance beam to seal a win.

Freshman Aisha Gerber delivered a 9.875 in the final rotation to cap off the victory.

Also in that meet, senior Ariana Berlin and freshman Elyse Hopfner-Hibbs tied for first on bars.

Sophomore Niki Tom and freshmen Zamarripa and Gerber tied for first on beam.

Hopfner-Hibbs has performed solid routines for the Bruins so far this season, hitting 24 of her last 25 routines and scoring 9.775 or better.

Eighteen of those 24 hit routines have gone for 9.85 or better.

Berlin has maintained a similar consistency for the squad, hitting all 21 of her routines, with 17 of those 21 scores going for 9.8 or better.

She has hit over 96 percent of her routines in her four years at UCLA.

Georgia is the four-time defending NCAA champion in the sport.

The Gym Dogs come to Westwood on the heels of an impressive victory against Florida last weekend in which they scored a national-best 198.2, which also marked the highest score by a Georgia team in 10 years.
