A second BruinAlert was sent out at 2:19 p.m. today notifying students that a taped-up shoebox found in Parking Structure 1 was determined not to be a threat.
Nancy Greenstein, a university police spokeswoman, said the box is thought to have been designed to look like a suspicious package, but actually poses no threat.
The Los Angeles Police Department bomb squad stepped in after the box was found. An initial BruinAlert text message was sent at 12:57 p.m., when students were told to wait for an “all-clear sign.”
Students now may resume normal activities, but should remain aware in that area, according to the alert.
Greenstein said it’s hard to determine who is to blame for the package, or whether it was intentionally made to resemble a threat. She added that UCPD will continue investigating origin of the box.
“We’re going to look at the circumstances,” she said. “There may be people who came to the scene, or maybe someone will come to give us additional information.”
