Women’s tennis in good spirits after Fullerton win

The UCLA women’s tennis team looked sharp in its last chance to prepare for conference play.

The Bruins overwhelmed Cal State Fullerton 7-0 by sweeping the doubles point and winning each singles match in straight sets in Fullerton on Saturday.

“I think we performed well today,” coach Stella Sampras Webster said.” It was a little different playing on the road. We played a team that was not as good as (our last opponent,) Fresno State, but I think our team did a good job of representing UCLA.”

The team’s success started with doubles, where the Bruins (10-2) played confidently. Sampras Webster decided to change things up a bit, moving freshman Carling Seguso and junior Stephanie Wetmore to the No. 2 doubles spot and adding freshman Jordan Dockendorf and senior Anna-Viktoria Lind to the No. 3 spot.

“I just wanted to give Jordan and Anna-Viktoria a chance to play doubles to give some other people a chance to play,” Sampras Webster said.

The team didn’t disappoint, winning their doubles match 8-2. Sophomore Andrea Remynse was happy to see some other teams have success.

“They did well,” Remynse said. “Carly and Steph did well. Anna-Viktoria and Jordan got a chance to play and took advantage of it.”

Remynse played well herself, winning both her doubles match and singles match without losing a single game.

Remynse was coming back from an injury that kept her off the court for singles play last weekend and wanted to take the opportunity to improve her game before facing No. 9 USC on Wednesday. “I was feeling pretty good,” Remynse said. “I was trying some new things. That was a good experience. I was working on coming to the net and finishing points at the net.”

As for the injury, it doesn’t seem to be affecting her much.

“It’s feeling great,” Remynse said. “I think I’m at 100 percent with it.”

Sampras Webster saw the road game as an opportunity for the team to grow closer and calm their nerves before the tough Pac-10 play coming up.

“Every time we get on the road it’s a good bonding opportunity for the team,” she said. “Going into this match we wanted to prepare us for going into USC. They had a chance to know that their match is pretty under control, and they may do some things they usually wouldn’t do.”
