Yesterday, city council debates occurred on campus, emphasizing the active role that Bruins should take in local issues.
This board strongly recommends that students register to vote in Los Angeles County and vote in city elections.
There are many local issues addressed by city leaders that affect students including, but not limited to, rent control, public transportation, recycling and public works like sidewalks and streetlights.
In past years, non-student residents of the area surrounding campus have been making choices for the student body. For instance, the school administration has been limited in putting up lights around the UCLA perimeter because residents do not want them shining in their homes at night. This is a safety issue that has been around for years, and we, as students with a vote, choose to vote for representatives who will hear our safety concerns over the vanity of Bel Air homeowners.
Another issue has been amplified sound on campus. Our school can only have amplified sound for one hour a day, which restricts the events we can hold on campus.
These are the issues that affect our everyday lives, and we should exercise our right to change them. We complain about the potholes in the roads, the cracking sidewalks, the increasing rent costs and the safety issues. Let’s do something about it.
