UCLA-Washington State, Second Quarter

Bell just received a direct snap for the second time this game.

UCLA tight end just outmuscled Washington State’s Chima Nwachukwu and caught a 16-yard touchdown pass over his head. UCLA now leads 7-0.

Maybe the cold, wet field condition is a problem for kicker Jimmy Rotstein, his last kick was very short.

Looked like one of the Washington State lineman devliered a chop block at Brian Price’s knee when Lobbestael was scrambling and Price was essentially out of the play.

Tight end Nate Chandler just dropped Kevin Craft’s pass. I believe that is the first time Chandler has been thrown a pass. He began this season as a tight end, then shifted to offensive lineman during fall camp. Now he’s back at tight end.

There’s something to be said about a quarterback who knows how to stay on his feet- it’s not purely based on speed or strength. It’s more of an instinct. Kevin Craft just displayed that skill as he avoided multiple tacklers and found Terrence Austin for a crucial first down. The Bruins are threatening to take a 14-0 lead.

Brian Price is playing fullback as the Bruins line up at the goal line. Price didn’t level any one but tailback Kahlil Bell still found a way into the endzone. UCLA 14, Fresno State 0.

One play after he lined up at fullback, Brian Price sacks Lobbestael for a loss of five yards. Brigham Harwell follows suit and sacks Lobbestael on third down to force a Washington State punt.

Terrence Austin almost found a seam as he returned a Washington State punt, but he’s still setup UCLA with excellent field position.

Kevin Craft has been looking to tight end Ryan Moya often, he just passed to him for a five yard gain to setup third and short.

UCLA will punt on fourth and short from the Washington State 41. Coaches must have decided it was most important to protect their 14 point lead, and, because of potential field position, it wasn’t worth the risk.

Washington State is now 2-8 on third down.

Referee Jay Stricherz keeps referring to Washington State University whenever he announces a timeout. He must be a real stickler for detail.

That’s the end of the first half. UCLA hasn’t looked spectacular, but Washington State is lifeless offensively. The Cougars have only 26 yards rushing and 63 yards passing. They’ve run 30 plays and gained just 89 yards and six first downs.
