Editorial: Top public schools get high rank for low cost

This past Friday, U.S. News and World Report released the 2009 rankings for the best national universities. Harvard University may have been named the top school, but Bruins have something to celebrate as well.

UCLA was named 25, right in front of the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor and University of Southern California among others.

No public universities managed to crack the top 20, with UC Berkeley coming in four spots ahead of UCLA, at 21. However, with five public schools making the top 30 (the others being University of Virginia and University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill), UCLA and these other institutions have managed to prove, once again, it doesn’t take soaring tuition costs to make the grade.

Private universities such as Duke are putting their exponentially large funds toward free iPods for freshmen and other pricey perks that UCLA and other public universities will never be able to afford.

However, when it comes down to what really matters, such as class sizes, facilities and professor-to-student ratios, UCLA is doing exactly what it should be.

Here’s an 8-clap for another great year, and we hope UCLA continues its streak as one of the best.
