The UCLA Women’s golf team made its mark at the U.S. Women’s Open at Interlachen Country Club in Edina, Minn. Defending U.S. Women’s Amateur champion Maria Jose Uribe, who starred as a freshman at UCLA, shared the leaderboard with top names for much of the tournament. She finished her final round at 2-under par, ahead of such notable players as top-ranked Lorena Ochoa and former world No. 1 Annika Sorenstam. At UCLA, Uribe helped guide the Bruins to a second-place finish at the NCAA Championships.
Sophomore Sydnee Michaels also made a strong showing, surviving the Friday cut and ending her tournament with 12-over par as one of few amateur players in the tournament.
Following the first round of play at the Open, both Uribe and Michaels were among the top 15 on the leaderboard, with Uribe retaining her solid position throughout the next three days. After shooting her third round at 1-under par, she closed her tournament with a 2-over 75 to finish tied for 10th place. The native Colombian was one of only 12 players to complete the tournament with a score under par.
Uribe and Michaels were both named All-Americans after this past season, with Uribe joining Tiffany Joh on the first team. Michaels was named to the second team alongside fellow Bruin Glory Yang.
