Editors picked for UCLA publications

The Associated Students UCLA Communications Board appointed the editors of some Student Media publications for the 2008-2009 school year on Tuesday.

The board appoints editors during a three-month period, according to Student Media Director Arvli Ward.

The board is the publisher of the Daily Bruin, UCLAradio.com, bruinwalk.com and seven community-oriented newsmagazines.

Jennifer L. Wang and Jennifer H. Wang, both first-year electrical engineering students, were appointed editors-in-chief of BruinLife, the UCLA yearbook.

“I think I’d like to perfect the yearbook,” Jennifer H. Wang said.

She said she was interested in developing staff and focusing on improving publication deadlines for the yearbook.

Jennifer L. Wang said she would like to increase the yearbook’s popularity on campus.

“We want to reach the full potential of BruinLife,” she said.

Though both are now first-year students, Jennifer L. Wang said she was confident the two could successfully lead the publication.

Priscilla Gonzalez, a second-year history and Chicano and Chicana studies student, and Maria Renteria, a first-year undeclared student, were elected as the editors-in-chief of La Gente de Aztlan, a newsmagazine concerned with issues in the Latino community.

Gonzalez and Renteria both said they hope to use the newsmagazine as an avenue to engage students with the diverse L.A. area.

“The magazine has really been improving this year. … I hope that next year we can bring more multiculturalism to our publication,” Gonzalez said. “We want to reach out more to the campus readers and be more involved.”

She added that they have plans to make use of their Web site, since they only publish in print once a quarter.

“We want to really develop our Web site. … It will be updated more often,” Gonzalez said.

Renteria said she would like to see content such as documentaries be hosted on their Web site and to reach out to high school students.

Fareeha Molvi, a second-year physiological science student, was elected editor-in-chief of the Al-Talib newsmagazine for the remainder of the current school year. Molvi was unavailable for comment.

Kirsten Ferreri, a third-year English student, and Anthony Pesce, a third-year geography/environmental studies student, were appointed editors-in-chief of their respective publications, Ha’Am newsmagazine and the Daily Bruin, at the previous board meeting on April 14.

Ferreri said Ha’Am will be publishing for the first time in two years soon, and, as a result of its absence, the publication has failed to develop a relationship with the Jewish community.

“The biggest thing I’m looking forward to is revitalizing the magazine,” she said.

Ward said the board interviewed one of the two applicants for UCLAradio.com general manager but was unable to meet with the second candidate because of a schedule conflict.

The general manager will be named, along with the editor-in-chief of the other newsmagazines Nommo, Outwrite, FEM and Pacific Ties, at the next board meeting on June 2, he added.
