Mark G. Yudof, the newly appointed president of the University of California, will take office starting June 16, according to a statement released by the UC Office of the President Thursday.
Yudof will serve as a special adviser to the interim chancellor of the University of Texas until he takes up his post when current UC president Robert C. Dynes formally leaves his post in June, a date both parties agreed on, said Brad Hayward, a spokesman for UCOP.
Yudof, who was unanimously appointed by the Board of Regents at its March 27 meeting, said he is excited to join the UC and be a part of what he called the university’s extraordinary qualities.
Though Yudof said he had not yet determined a specific agenda for the UC, Hayward said Yudof has spoken extensively about the issues he considers important to the university.
Following the March 27 regents meeting, Yudof spoke in favor of measures to increase diversity at UC campuses and keep higher education affordable for California students.
Yudof is well known in Texas for persuading state legislators to de-regulate University of Texas fees so that each campus in the system could charge students different amounts for fees.
Yudof also said he believes the UC will remain healthy and a high-caliber institution despite recent budget cuts and potential fee increases.
