The motion would require all polling places to display information about exactly which candidates each voter group, including those registered “decline to state,” would be eligible to vote for.
Currently, independent voters can vote for any candidate on the Democratic ballot and independents can vote for state-level Republican primaries, but not a Republican presidential nominee.
Though there’s nothing complicated about these restrictions, many voters, and even poll workers, may not have been aware of them.
Any action which increases understanding of the voting process will help increase voter participation.
Though making the rules available in polling places is a step in the right direction, many independent voters may not even have bothered to vote because they believed they would not be allowed to.
Requiring the same information to be included in voter registration forms, voting guides and other preparatory materials would make this legislation even stronger.
