Men’s tennis continued its streak of solid play Wednesday with a 6-1 win over San Diego at the Los Angeles Tennis Center.
The win pushed the No. 8 Bruin team to 4-0 on the season. San Diego fell to 1-2.
Two of the Bruins’ top players survived tough matches to claim important wins.
Mathieu Dehaine won the first set easily over San Diego’s Chris Coetzee 6-2, but then dropped the second set 6-0.
Dehaine battled back in the third set to win 6-2 and take the victory.
Holden Seguso, a freshman from Bradenton, Fla., also had to fight back after dropping the second set of his match against Dean Jackson.
Seguso won the first set 6-2 before the match became much more competitive.
Jackson won the second set 7-5, and the third set went to tie-breakers, where Seguso won 10-6.
The Bruins’ No. 1 player, Harel Srugo, was the only member of the UCLA to drop his match Wednesday.
Srugo lost on the top court to San Diego’s Thomas Liversage. the No, 29 ranked player in the nation.
Srugo came oh-so-close to pulling off the win.
He dropped the first set 3-6, before taking a 7-6 win in the second set.
The third set went to a tiebreaker, which Liversage won 12-10.
The win gave San Diego its only point of the match.
The Bruins won the doubles point against the Toreros.
Dehaine and Seguso teamed up for an 8-3 win over Jose Manuel Munoz and Charl Wolmarans.
Jeremy Drean and Michael Look beat Jackson and Nils Schive 8-6.
The Bruins will stay at home to try to continue their winning streak Friday against No. 27 Boise State.
The match begins at 1:30 p.m.
WOMEN IN WISCONSIN: The No. 2 ranked women’s tennis team will play its first round of matches at the USTA/ITA National Team Indoor Championships today in Madison, Wisconsin.
The Bruins’ are the No. 2 seed of the tournament.
They play North Carolina in the first round at 7 a.m. Thursday morning.
The Tar Heels are led by sophomore Sanaz Marand, the nation’s No. 14 ranked singles player.
A win over the Tar Heels could set up an interesting matchup for the coach Stella Sampras Webster’s team against rival USC, the tournament’s No. 7 seed.
USC and UCLA are two of four Pac-10 teams among the tournament’s top eight seeds.
Stanford is the No. 1 seed and California is the No. 6 seed.
UCLA has never won this event, but the Bruins do have a solid history there.
Last year the Bruins dropped their first match to Northwestern 5-2, but were able to defeat host Wisconsin 6-1.
The Bruins ended up reaching the NCAA finals last year where they lost to Georgia Tech. The team has yet to lose this season. The Bruins have wins over Cal Poly, UC Irvine and Pepperdine in 2008.
The Bruins are led by three-time All-American senior Riza Zalameda, a Los Angeles native.
Zalameda is ranked No. 25 in the ITA rankings.
Two other Bruins are ranked in the top 30.
Freshman Andrea Remynse in ranked No. 27 and sophomore Yasmin Schnack is the No. 28-ranked player.
