When the fees were increased, the language used by the UC on its Web site read that student fees would “remain the same for each student for the duration of his or her enrollment in the professional-degree program.”
The UC argues it reserves the right to change fees at any time, even if the changes contradict previous statements.
The UC should know students reserve the right to sue the UC if it contradicts such guarantees, as we should be able to expect the UC to stick to guarantees made on its Web site.
The students who successfully sued are a model example of how we as students should hold the University accountable in times when funds are scarce. The University needs to recognize that unannounced fee hikes are not an acceptable solution to securing more money.
Claiming such deception is within the UC’s rights is tantamount to abuse of power, and betrays the students who trust the system of leadership at the UC.
