Frustrations ran high Tuesday evening during the Undergraduate Student Assocation Council meeting over office space reallocation guidelines.
From last week’s discussion, President Gabe Rose opened the discussion by saying that he would really like to hear more solutions or discussions for the topic concerning safe space for student groups like Queer Alliance.
Constructive discussion never took off, and solutions were not agreed upon during the meeting.
Rose said that he recognized the difficulty in resolving the problems of office space.
"USAC wants to accommodate everyone. There are only 80 offices, so it is not that simple," Rose said.
Many council members and representatives voiced their different ideals and motives at the table.
Student leaders from the Afrikan Student Union said that a physical assessment of all student goups must be made to weed out which groups need or do not need space.
Other student representatives from Queer Alliance voiced concerns about having a solo office that has privacy for all its members. One student said that gay students need a private place to congregate becuase they are four times more likely to commit suicide than straight students according to a University of Massachusetts study.
Certain council members did not agree with the idea of solo space.
"Our focus is building a greater UCLA community. By separating one group here and here, it would further divide groups even more," said Sherlyn Mossahebfar, Facilities commissioner.
Administrative Representative Dr. Berky Nelson agreed with Mossahebfar by saying that student groups should not be antagonistic with more new student groups sharing space.
"It is not an easy job. Please, people, try to be as sensitive as you can to other people’s needs. Callousness will reign," said Nelson.
Councilmembers and student group leaders continued to go back and forth on the same issue of how USAC can allocate enough space for every student group.
Then Rose said he was frustrated with how the meeting was going.
‘We are completely out of order," he said.
After further discussion and several rolling eyes, the councilmembers motioned to table the discussion on office space allocation guidelines to next week’s meeting.
