University of California Regent John Moores resigned his post Monday effective immediately, said Student Regent Ben Allen.
Moores, who focused mostly on admissions issues, Allen said, served on the University of Houston Board of Regents from 1991 to 1994, and chaired the UC Board of Regents in 2002, according to the Web site for the UC Office of the President.
Allen said the reasons for Moores’ resignation are yet unknown. “All I know is that he sent a letter to Chairman of the Regents, Richard Blum, that said “˜Dick, please accept my resignation effective this date. Best regards,'” Allen said.
He said he has no idea how the resignation will specifically affect the Board of Regents, but is certain they will be fine.
“The governor will appoint a replacement, and the work of the University will continue,” said Allen.
Student Regent-designate D’Artagnan Scorza declined to comment on Moores’ resignation, as did Na’shaun Neal, the UCLA representative of the Student Advisory Committee for the selection of the next UC president.
Former governor of California, Gray Davis, appointed Moores to the UC Board of Regents in March of 1999. His term was to extend until 2009, which makes his sudden resignation especially surprising, according to Allen.
“It was a shock,” Allen said.
