In an effort to bring one of India’s most dazzling festivals to campus, the Hindu Students Council and Bharatiyam, the Indian graduate student group, hosted Diwali celebrations Thursday.
Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights, symbolizes the victory of good over evil and commemorates the Hindu god Rama’s return from exile, said Khushali Shah, president of HSC.
Traditionally, Hindus in India celebrate by lighting diyas, small clay oil lamps, and setting off firecrackers in the streets. They also celebrate by performing pujas, Hindu religious ceremonies, in honor of Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and prosperity.
Shah emphasized that different communities celebrate Diwali differently.
The council performed a puja and provided students with Indian food.
Atika Sanchetee, a second-year undeclared student, said the festivities reminded her of home.
Sanchetee, who is an international student, said festivals are about being with family and friends but if she can’t be in India, partaking in the festivities at school keeps the festival relevant.
“I wish I could be home right now, but this is the next best thing,” Sanchetee said.
