Freshman finds a spot in the Hall of Champions

The UCLA Hall of Champions got yet another piece of championship hardware last week.

Freshman golfer Maria Jose Uribe’s trophy from the 2007 United States Women’s Amateur will be displayed at the Hall of Champions for the rest of the school year.

Uribe won the Robert Cox Trophy this summer when she defeated Duke’s Amanda Blumenherst in a 36-hole championship match at Crooked Stick Golf Club in Carmel, Ind. With the win, Uribe became the first Colombian to ever win a United States Golf Association title.

The championship was the culmination of a brutal week. The event started with 36 holes of stroke play. The top 64 finishers were placed in the match-play tournament. Uribe won five matches before facing Blumenherst, who is the No. 1 golfer in women’s golf.

Two other Bruins have won the Robert Cox Trophy: Kay Cockerill won it twice in 1986 and 1987, and Jane Park won it in 2004. The trophy itself was first awarded in 1896.

Uribe has continued her success in her first matches as a Bruin. She led the Bruins with a final round score of 69 at the Fall Preview in Albuquerque, N.M. Uribe finished in eighth place overall, and the Bruins finished third in the event, behind Duke and USC.

The freshman also placed 10th in the team’s first tournament of the year, the Mason Rudolph Classic. Uribe was one of four UCLA players to place in the top 15 as the Bruins went on to win the tournament and claim the No. 1 ranking in the country.

GAME TIME SET: The UCLA football team’s game against California at the Rose Bowl on Oct. 20 will start at 12:30 p.m.

ABC will televise the game. It will be the second time the network has televised the team, as it also aired the game against Notre Dame. ABC is also scheduled to televise the Bruins’ upcoming games against Arizona and USC.

California is ranked No. 2 in the latest AP poll. The Golden Bears will face Oregon State in Berkeley on Saturday before they travel to face UCLA at the Rose Bowl a week later.

Last year California demolished UCLA 38-24 at Berkeley, handing the Bruins their fourth consecutive loss. The home team has won in the two teams’ last five meetings.

LOPEZ OUT FOR STANFORD: Brook Lopez, the 7-foot center for the Stanford Cardinal, will sit out the fall quarter for the Cardinal after being ruled academically ineligible, the university announced Monday.

Lopez will still practice with the team while he sits out during Stanford’s fall quarter. He may end up not missing any of the conference schedule, as he could be eligible to return for the Cardinal’s Dec. 19 game against Santa Clara.

The Fresno native started 18 games last year, averaging 12.6 points and 6 rebounds per game, and was also named to the Pac-10 All-Freshman Team.

BYRNES, D-BACKS ADVANCE: Former UCLA baseball player Eric Byrnes helped the Arizona Diamondbacks reach the National League Championship series last week.

Byrnes homered and singled in the team’s series-clinching 5-1 win over the Chicago Cubs.

Next up for the Diamondbacks is the Colorado Rockies. The Rockies swept the Phillies, setting up an NL West matchup in the league championship series. Game 1 is set for Thursday; the game time has not yet been set.
