Saxon RA has taken grievances too far
I found Jose Manaiza’s statement in Monday’s article concerning his firing from his position as a Saxon resident assistant (“Fired Saxon RA to seek answers from chancellor,” News, April 23) to be extremely disheartening.
According to the article, Manaiza declared that “it will look really bad on UCLA to expose this story.”
I understand the unfortunate situation he feels he is in, but blackmailing the university with the threat of publicizing his case to the media is a cheap shot.
On a professional level, if all checkpoints of the university have sided against Manaiza’s case, I fail to see how turning his case into a mudslinging campaign reflects positively on his character.
On a student level, this is not how someone who truly loves this campus should act.
Using bad publicity to damage the reputation of the university as a motive to reconcile his case in his favor would be selfish.
UCLA is an entity larger than the Office of Residential Life. Despite the grievances Manaiza might have with that particular aspect of the campus, I fail to see how hurting the reputation of the entire university helps either him or the school.
I, like many people on this campus, have dealt with bureaucracy and being cheated, but I always knew that despite my own personal qualms with these individual sectors, the university was not to blame.
I would never besmirch this fine institution’s reputation ““ which reflects that of the faculty, staff, alumni and students ““ for my own gain.
