Community Housing a valuable resource
In response to the recent column by Rashmi Joshi regarding the apartment search in the Westwood area (“Apartment search can be daunting,” Feb. 16), I wanted to bring attention to the resources provided by the UCLA Community Housing Office.
The Community Housing Office is a free resource for all full-time students.
We maintain an online database of private listings for a variety of alternative housing options in the community at www.cho.ucla.edu.
Year-round, our office receives listings for vacant apartments, guest houses, condos, rooms in private homes and roommate situations, many within the Westwood area, and many within a few miles of campus.
Finding housing in the UCLA area is a challenge for anyone, students and non-students alike.
And the fact that Housing asks undergraduate students to submit their housing application in January can add to the confusion faced by students looking for alternative housing in the community.
The Housing schedule doesn’t necessarily correspond to the larger L.A. rental market.
In fact, many of our building managers indicate that summer is the time of the year when they have the most vacancies. Generally, tenants give landlords notice of their intent to vacate about 30 days before they intend to move out. That makes it very difficult to secure an apartment in January or February when you don’t want to move-in until June, July or even August.
We want to let students know that there are lots of housing options available, and now is a perfect time to start considering the costs and options related to moving off-campus.
Community Housing will present an apartment search workshop on Feb. 27 in De Neve Plaza Room A & B from 6:30 ““ 7:30 p.m. We will review search strategies, resources available through Community Housing and budgetary considerations for moving off-campus.
We invite all interested students to attend. If you can’t attend the workshop, feel free to stop by our office on the first floor of Sproul Hall, in the same area as the Housing Administration.
