Fire damages abandoned fraternity house

A fire broke out early Monday morning at an abandoned fraternity
house on Gayley Avenue, according to the Los Angeles Fire
Department.

The vacant former Sigma Phi Epsilon house reportedly caught fire
at about 2 a.m.

LAFD firefighters arrived shortly thereafter and were able to
confine the blaze to the third floor of the building. It was
extinguished about half an hour later, according to a statement on
the department’s Web site.

Nancy Greenstein, director of university police community
services, said UCPD did not have any units present at the site.

There were no injuries reported, but firefighters estimated the
damage at about $55,000.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
