Boxer scheduled to speak on congressional issues

California Sen. Barbara Boxer is scheduled to speak on campus
today about a variety of issues tied to the elections.

Boxer, D-California, will, among other issues, address the war
in Iraq and the recent Congressional page scandal, a controversy
surrounding Rep. Mark Foley’s, R-Florida, resignation after
allegations that he had exchanged inappropriate messages with a
teenage male congressional page.

Boxer’s visit will be held at the UCLA School of Public
Policy. David Meadvin, Boxer’s deputy press secretary, said
he also expects the senator to discuss congressional races in the
November election.

“In her remarks, Boxer will discuss what is at stake for
Americans in the 2006 election,” the statement read.
“Boxer will make the case as to why Republicans’ claim
to be the party of “˜family values’ just doesn’t
hold water when you look at their record on issues important to
American families as well as their handling of the congressional
page scandal.”

Boxer has been an outspoken critic of the Bush administration
and the war in Iraq.

“The war in Iraq and the war on terror are not one and the
same,” she said in an August statement. “It’s
time to stop scaring the American people and start protecting
them.”

According to a statement from Boxer’s office, the senator
plans to speak about the issues first, and will then take questions
from the audience.

Boxer visited UCLA nearly two years ago, when she and other
high-profile Democrats such as Hillary Clinton attended a
fundraiser for Democratic candidates in the 2004 Senate races.

Stan Paul, a university spokesman, said the School of Public
Affairs hopes to attract a large student audience to the event.

He said there is space for about 200 people to attend. As of
Thursday night, about half those spaces had been reserved.

Boxer has served as one of California’s representatives in
the U.S. Senate since 1993.

She was also a member of the House of Representatives for 10
years before being elected to the Senate.

During her tenure in Congress, Boxer has often focused on
environmental and women’s issues. She has consistently voted
in support of a woman’s right to choose to have an abortion
and recently has voted in favor of bills to combat global
warming.

Recently, Boxer has also introduced a bill in the senate that
would protect U.S. troops in Iraq if civil war breaks out in that
nation.

Anyone who wishes to attend Boxer’s appearance must
RSVP, either by calling (310) 206-8034 or e-mailing
