Bruins fail to garner first points at Pac-10

The Pac-10 Championships got underway over the weekend, but the
two underclassmen sent by the Bruins were unable to get UCLA on the
board. Freshman Matt Reuter and redshirt sophomore Georgea Richards
represented the Bruins at the Pac-10 multi-event competitions in
Eugene, Ore., as Reuter finished eleventh overall and Richards
placed ninth. Richards stood in seventh place after the first day
of competition in the heptathlon and despite earning a season-best
total of 4,838, she finished just one place out of scoring
position. Richards recorded new season-best marks in the javelin
(101-10), 800-meter (2:30.06), 200-meter (25.00) and also a
lifetime best in the shot put (35-.25). For the men, Reuter had a
strong first day of the decathlon as he found himself in eighth
place after achieving lifetime bests in the 100-meter (11.60) and
long jump (21-0). However, the freshman fell to eleventh place on
day two. His total of 6,269 was just two points shy of his
season-best mark from the Mt. SAC Relays. Arizona State’s
Jackie Johnson won the heptathlon with a total of 5,987 points
while Arizona’s Robert Arnold took the decathlon, scoring
7,691 points.

MODESTO RELAYS: While two Bruins were
attempting to score UCLA’s first points at the Pac-10
Championships, a small group of athletes took part in the Modesto
Relays in order to stay sharp for the upcoming meet in Oregon. At
Modesto Junior College, redshirt junior Mike Landers had a strong
showing, finishing second in the pole vault with a solid jump of
17-5. Teammate Chris Bencomo also had an impressive performance,
jumping a lifetime-best and regional qualifying mark of 16-7.25.
For the women, sophomore Allison Miller finished with a season-best
mark of 5-8.75 in the high jump to finish fourth overall. Several
women’s pole vaulters were also competing. Sophomore
Elizabeth Woepse matched her lifetime best with a jump of 12-11.50
and senior Chelsea Johnson finished fifth overall, clearing
13-5.25.
