Though the search committee to find UCLA’s next chancellor
had hoped to select a candidate in time for next week’s UC
Board of Regents meeting, committee members said they have yet to
settle on a recommendation after meeting Thursday in Oakland.
Committee members said that though they were unable to finalize
decisions, they have narrowed the pool of candidates.
Currently, the search committee is still in the process of
interviewing candidates from both private and public
universities.
Members estimate they will make a recommendation in time for the
May regents meeting to be held at UC San Francisco.
After UCLA Chancellor Albert Carnesale announced in September
that he plans to step down after this school year, UC President
Robert Dynes appointed a committee to interview and make
recommendations for the next university chancellor.
In an earlier interview, Linda Williams, associate president of
the UC Office of the President, said that “overall, the
process can be extensive, but the goal is certainly to not exceed
the March deadline to bring this forward for approval by the
regents.”
The deadline for Dynes to forward his and the committee’s
recommendation to the regents for final approval was defined as
mid-to-late spring, according to a press release from the UC Office
of the President.
The committee met on Thursday in Oakland, and members confirmed
that though the group is focusing on a small number of candidates,
it has no finalized recommendations ready for Dynes to present to
the Board of Regents meeting on March 16 and 17.
Once Dynes and the committee make a recommendation, the regents
must approve the next chancellor.
The regents’ next meeting is in May, but a they might
select a new chancellor sooner ““ the board can call a special
meeting to approve a candidate.
Chancellor Carnesale was appointed during a special meeting
carried out by teleconference between regularly scheduled
meetings.
