Athlete diversity should be addressed
In the submission “Campus needs diversity” (Oct.
14), Rosina Becerra, the associate vice chancellor for the
Chancellor’s Office of Faculty Diversity, states that
“UCLA, as a major educational institution, is committed to
having faculty, staff and students who are reflective of the
diverse society in which it exists.”
It would be of interest to see evidence of this commitment in
the recruitment of athletes for major varsity sports based on the
three steps she articulates in her submission, in particular the
first step, which calls “to abolish the long-standing belief
that “˜cream rises to the top.'”
