Businesses profit from Disneyland’s
anniversary
ANAHEIM “”mdash; Businesses around Disneyland are profiting from
the theme park’s 50th anniversary, even though the
celebration started two weeks ago.
The city is projecting a 10 percent increase in hotel bed taxes
this year and businesses are anticipating the best summer since the
post-Sept. 11 downturn because of Disney’s promotions.
“˜”˜If you take this month alone, our occupancy will
be up about 15 percent, and that’s just in the one
month,” said Ken Buksa, general manager of Sheraton
Anaheim.
Tour companies and even Knott’s Berry Farm amusement park
in Buena Park say they’re reaping the benefits.

Suburbia a popular post-rain refuge for bears
BANNING “”mdash; Heavy rains followed by hot weather may have
contributed to recent reports of bears going into neighborhoods,
wildlife officials said.
On Saturday, a 16-year-old girl was alone at her Banning home
when a mother bear and her two cubs broke through the window and
ate food in the kitchen. The mother bear was shot by a family
friend and was later found dead, said Steve Martarano, spokesman
for the state Department of Fish and Game.
