LAUSD proposes changes to curriculum
An academic reform plan being considered by the school district
would require all high school students to take courses needed for
admission to state universities.
On average, 67 percent of courses offered by Los Angeles Unified
School District high schools meet admission requirements for
four-year California universities.
The reform plan presented to the Board of Education this week
would mandate that every student complete 15 courses needed for
entry into the University of California or California State
University systems. The plan would begin with the freshman class of
2008.
“We need to raise the level of rigor in our
curriculum,” Superintendent Roy Romer said. “You
don’t turn a school district like this (into a college
preparatory school district overnight), but that is the right goal
and the right aim.”
The board will vote on the proposal next month.
The so-called A-G college prep program includes four years of
English, a recommended four years of math and at least two years of
history, science and foreign language.
“If we don’t give students access to A-G
requirements, we are limiting their choices,” board president
Jose Huizar said. “I come across many, many students who in
their senior year tell me, ‘If only I had known, if I only I
had taken the A-G requirements, I would be at a
university.'”
Turkish people upset by Schwarzenegger
remarks
ANKARA, Turkey “”mdash; A Turkish group uniting hundreds of
businesses and organizations demanded Tuesday that Arnold
Schwarzenegger’s movies be banned from Turkish television to
protest the California governor’s use of the term
“genocide” to describe the massacre of Armenians by
Turks during World War I.
Schwarzenegger, a former actor best known for his role in
“The Terminator,” declared April 24 a “Day of
Remembrance of the Armenian Genocide.” California has one of
the largest populations of diaspora Armenians.
Other California governors have issued annual proclamations
referring to the killings as a genocide, but last week
Schwarzenegger also signed legislation to permanently mark the
day.
