Katherine Mertz, an assistant coach at UCLA for the past five
seasons, was named UNLV women’s soccer coach on Friday.
Mertz, whose primary responsibility had been coaching the Bruin
goalkeepers, helped guide UCLA to three berths in the College Cup,
including an appearance in the NCAA title game this past December.
She was instrumental in helping freshman Valerie Henderson develop
into one of the nation’s top young goalkeepers this past
season. “I am extremely excited to come to a great university
such as UNLV, and one that has had good success in women’s
soccer,” Mertz said. “I feel that for my first head
coaching job, the tools are in place here to keep the program at a
national level.”
