City levies fines against alleged money
launderers

The city’s Ethics Commission levied $147,000 in fines
against 13 people allegedly involved in political money laundering,
officials said. The fines bring the total penalties approved by the
panel recently against 112 people, including associates of Westside
developer Mark Alan Abrams, up to $736,615. The associates said
Abrams reimbursed them for contributions to James K. Hahn’s
2001 mayoral campaign.

LAUSD looks to boost graduation rates

Leaders of the Los Angeles Unified School District are taking
steps to address the high dropout rate at the nation’s
second-largest school district.

In an unanimous vote Tuesday, the school board called on
Superintendent Roy Romer to develop plans within 120 days to boost
graduation rates and keep students in school.

The action was prompted by a Harvard University study that
showed just 39 percent of Latinos and 47 percent of black students
who should have graduated in 2002 did. The report found the
district’s overall graduation rate at 45.3 percent.
