Senior pole vaulter Yoo Kim will have to wait to follow up on
his success after a fantastic indoor season where he set a new
personal record. Last weekend Kim suffered a deep laceration in his
hand when his pole shattered during a practice session. Shards from
the fiberglass pole tore completely through Kim’s hand,
prohibiting him from vaulting for the next two to three weeks.
“Yoo Kim will be fine, according to our trainers,”
men’s track and field coach Art Venegas said. “He
should be back in three weeks.” While Kim will not be able to
vault in the coming weeks, Venegas said he will be participating in
other types of drills to keep him in shape. Kim was even seen with
his cast on, throwing the discus the very next day.
WOMEN’S ROWING: After receiving its highest ranking since
its reinstatement as an NCAA sport at UCLA in 2001, the No. 13 UCLA
women’s rowing team will have a chance to prove its ranking
is deserved in its first ever Windermere Collegiate Crew Classic
appearance. This weekend’s competition in Redwood Shores will
consist of more than 130 individual races. On Saturday, UCLA will
go head-to-head against Clemson, Virginia and Texas in the varsity
and second-varsity team events while the novice eight will go
against Washington, California and Clemson.
BASEBALL: This past Tuesday, Stanford junior infielder Jed
Lowrie and Arizona junior right-handed pitcher Kevin Guyette each
received the honor of being named Pac-10 Baseball Player and
Pitcher of the Week for the week of March 29 to April 4. In a
conference opening series sweep of Washington State last weekend,
Lowrie hit .500 (5-for-10) with a double, two homers, eight RBI and
seven runs scored, while managing a 1.200 slugging percentage. As
for Guyette he threw a complete game one-hitter in an 11-0 shutout
victory over UCLA on April 2.
