Regan’s column an insult to Bruins
David Regan opened his Friday column about the men’s
basketball team’s sound defeat of Cal on Thursday night with,
“I did my best to come up with a clever, refreshing idea for
this column. I pretty much failed.” (“Solid victory
could signal turnaround,” Feb. 18).
I agree. After an exhilarating and satisfying evening watching
the Bruins soundly defeat Cal, I was looking forward to reading
about the game in the Daily Bruin on Friday. After Colin Yuhl and
Jeff Eisenberg’s thoughtful analyses of the game, I got to
Regan’s column.
I was duped into reading it in the first place by the title,
“Solid victory could signal turnaround.”
How misleading! Regan opened the article by explaining that he
wanted to do one of the following activities instead of watching
the game:
a) Send his little brother (a freshman at Cal) to the game to
report information back to him via cell phone ““ his brother
declined.
b) Create a drinking game to play with his buddies for a
diversion while “watching” the game.
c) Watch the Duke game instead.
But, as David wrote, “My editors told me I couldn’t
write about the Blue Devils. So UCLA basketball it was.”
Poor guy! Our jobs can be demanding like that. What a
disrespectful response to our coach and team’s stellar effort
on Thursday night! The second half of his article contained some
lackluster praise about the team’s performance, but by then
the damage was done.
In light of this travesty, I’d like to offer my services
to cover the remaining basketball games for David. I can put my
English degree from Ohio State to good use, and David can watch the
Duke Blue Devils unencumbered. Bruin athletes and Daily Bruin
readers deserve better than juvenile, smart-aleck drivel.
