City to discuss LAPD child shooting
City officials will host a day of public discussions to respond
to community concerns over the police shooting of a 13-year-old
suspected car thief.
The meetings will be held at fire stations across the city on
Feb. 26, Assemblyman Mark Ridley-Thomas announced Saturday. The Los
Angeles Democrat is organizing the discussions, which will include
details of the ongoing investigation into the killing of Devin
Brown.
“People want answers,” Mayor James Hahn said.
He said that after speaking with South Los Angeles community
leaders, he did not expect any reaction to the shooting similar to
the 1992 riots, but instead believed it could add to
“cumulative frustration” in the community.
Researchers resume search for lost pilot
TORRANCE “”mdash; Researchers are hoping a two-day dive will help
solve the mystery of a female aviator whose plane disappeared into
the thick fog off the California coast more than 50 years ago.
Gertrude Tompkins Silver, a member of the Women’s Air
Force Service Pilots, piloted a new P-51D Mustang fighter plane on
the afternoon of Oct. 26, 1944, taking off from an airfield that is
now Los Angeles International Airport.
She was never seen again after the incident.
Sometime next month, divers will make another attempt, in a
series of searches, to find the wreckage of the plane.
