UCLA lineup remains undecided for first home match
against Loyola Marymount
The UCLA women’s tennis
team will kick off its season today at home against Loyola
Marymount. The Bruins are 12-0 all-time against the Lions and
cruised to a 7-0 win in last year’s season-opener. Though it
will be the first dual match for UCLA, most of its players already
gained some match experience this past weekend at either the
Freeman Memorial Tournament in Las Vegas or the Pac-10 Indoor
Championships in Seattle. Riza Zalameda and Daniela Bercek, fresh
off their tournament title at the Las Vegas event, are expected to
anchor the Bruins in both singles and doubles. Beyond that, coach
Stella Sampras Webster has not settled on a lineup. Alex McGoodwin,
Elizabeth Lumpkin, Sarah Gregg, Tracy Lin and Laura Gordon are
expected to compete for the No. 3-6 singles spots. But whichever
lineup Sampras Webster chooses, it will probably not impact the
outcome of today’s match. In last year’s match, UCLA
dropped just 11 games in singles.

MEN’S SOCCER: This past Sunday, the U.S.
Under-20 National Team captured the CONCACAF Qualifying Tournament.
With the aid of former Bruin forward Chad Barrett, who scored one
goal in the 2-0 win over Costa Rica, the United States finished
undefeated 3-0 and qualified for the 2005 World Youth Championships
in Holland. “We started a number of new players, but I was
confident they’d be able to get the job done and they
did,” said U.S. U-20 head coach Sigi Schmid, who was also a
former Bruin coach. “While qualifying for Holland was our
first objective, winning the group and going undefeated is a
testament to how hard the players have worked over the past few
months. Now we will concentrate on preparations for Holland over
the next five-and-a-half months.” After the game, Barrett was
named the Chevrolet Man of the Match. This is the second
consecutive game that a Bruin received this honor. Marvell Wynne
captured the accolade the game before. Both Bruin freshman Wynne
and sophomore defender Patrick Ianni played in the backline and
headed the U-20 team to its second straight shutout of the
tournament. This is the first time the United States has finished
undefeated as well as in sole possession of first place in the
qualifying tournament. Panama is in second place after defeating
Trinidad & Tobago 3-1. Though Panama and Costa Rica finished
with four points, Panama edged Costa Rica in total goals scored,
four to three.
