Fundraiser accused of election law
violations
A major campaign fund-raiser for Mayor James K. Hahn was accused
by the City Ethics Commission of orchestrating about $90,000 in
illegal contributions.
Developer Mark Alan Abrams allegedly violated city election laws
48 times and could face hundreds of thousands of dollars in
penalties, according to a formal complaint made public Monday by
the commission staff.
The full five-member commission will consider fines in coming
months.
LAX-LAPD merger may be put to vote
Voters may decide whether to merge the Los Angeles International
Airport police with the Los Angeles Police Department.
A City Council committee voted unanimously Monday to support a
ballot measure to remove a City Charter provision requiring an
independent airport police force.
The Public Safety Committee’s recommendation to place such
a measure on the May ballot goes to the full council this
month.
Merger discussions have been discussed for a decade, but the
proposal got traction after the July 4, 2002, shooting at the El Al
Airlines ticket counter in LAX that left three dead.
Mayor James K. Hahn and the Airport Commission opposed merging
the departments.
