Second-year UCLA football coach Karl Dorrell received a two-year
extension to his contract Friday after reaching an agreement with
the university, athletic director Dan Guerrero announced
Friday.
The extension agreement gives Dorrell a six-year contract, the
same length as his original contract, and will run through
2010.
"The progress the program has made under Karl’s leadership is
clearly evident," said Guerrero. "He has built a solid foundation
for the program and we expect the next several years to be very
successful ones for the UCLA football program."
The extension comes off the heels of a 6-5 season for the
Bruins, who will travel to the Las Vegas Bowl to face Wyoming next
Thursday.
The team finished the 2004 regular season on a positive note,
beating Oregon on Nov. 13 to become bowl eligible and then coming
within five points of beating top-ranked USC on Dec. 4. UCLA
finished fifth in the Pac-10 despite being picked to finish eighth
in the conference in the preseason.
"I am grateful to Dan Guerrero and Chancellor (Albert) Carnesale
for their support," Dorrell said. "I feel that we have the program
heading in the right direction. Our players and coaches have all
worked extremely hard this season. We all share the vision of
greatness for this program and we are excited about our
future."
Last January, Dorrell surprised many when he turned down the
offer of a one-year rollover, saying that signing an extension
after a 6-7 season wasn’t warranted.
The monetary terms of this contract will remain the same as the
original contract, with Dorrell earning a base salary of
approximately $600,000, plus incentives.
