A female student died late Thursday night in Dykstra Hall in
what police have said is an apparent suicide.
Amanda Hafleigh, known on her ultimate frisbee team as
“Chip,” was found in her room on the third floor of
Dykstra Hall.
“All of us at UCLA are deeply saddened by this tragic
death of a member of our campus community,” Chancellor Albert
Carnesale said in a statement. “We deeply value each person
in our UCLA family, and we extend our condolences to Amanda
Hafleigh’s family and friends.”
Representatives from the coroner’s office arrived at
Dykstra Hall and university police closed access to part of the
third floor during the hours immediately following the incident.
Administrators and resident assistants from the Office of
Residential Life consoled students as they gathered in the De Neve
Plaza Room until early Friday morning.
Counseling is available from Student Psychological Services
Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The UCLA Helpline is
also available by calling (310) 825-HELP.
Hafleigh was a second-year American literature student from Napa
and was on the undergraduate advisory board at the LGBT Resource
Center.
