Lack of funds may cancel state academic
decathlon
The California Academic Decathlon is running out of funds and
may not have enough money to hold its annual state championship in
March, according to the competition’s director.
The privately funded competition was founded in Orange County in
1968 and then spread to other counties and across the country.
California has dominated the decathlon over the last two
decades, winning 10 titles since 1982.
But now the birthplace of one of the nation’s most
renowned academic contests may no longer be able to support its own
program.
Without the state championship, California teams will not be
able to reach the national contest held this April in Chicago,
Executive Director Marvin Cobb told the Los Angeles Times in an
article published Sunday.
Governor poses with Hummer run on hydrogen
The moment seemed to capture perfectly Arnold
Schwarzenegger’s pledge to make hydrogen a viable fuel source
for California’s cars and trucks.
The tanned and smiling governor parked a hydrogen-powered Hummer
““ a specially made version of his signature vehicle ““
and hopped out of the car to slide a hydrogen fuel station’s
nozzle into the gas tank.
But the moment was all about appearances.
No fuel actually came out of the pump. The Hummer’s
builders would later acknowledge that it could only travel 50 miles
between refueling.
And despite the day’s alternative-fuel theme,
Schwarzenegger left in a gas-powered SUV that gets about 15 miles
to the gallon.
