With its 34-26 win over Oregon on Saturday in Eugene, Ore., UCLA
avenged its past demons and became bowl eligible.
The victory marks the Bruins’ (6-4, 4-3 Pac-10) first
victory over Oregon since 1999 and the team’s first win in
November since 2002.
Although the Bruins were without starting tailback Maurice Drew,
back-up true freshman Chris Markey did a more than adequate job
filling in, rushing for 131 yards and catching five passes for
another 84 yards.
His 29-yard run down the sideline set up a Manuel White
touchdown that gave UCLA its first lead at 14-7, and Markey again
caught a screen pass to set up White’s second touchdown.
Justin Medlock also had a superb game, kicking field goals from
52 and 50 yards. The second one came with just two minutes left in
the game, extending the Bruins’ lead to eight and forcing
Oregon to score a touchdown on the last drive to tie.
