Bruins surpass international, club, previously ranked
college boats UCLA finished first among U.S. Collegiate
Crews and fifth overall at the Head of the Charles Regatta last
Sunday in Boston. The team, competing in the event for the first
time since becoming an NCAA recognized sport, defeated a 20-team
field that included numerous international and club boats. They
also defeated previously ranked collegiate teams including Yale,
Princeton, Michigan and Brown. Jessica Rogers, Monica Grova,
Elizabeth Felter, Lauren Hamann and Emina Ong comprised the crew
that posted a final time of 14:06.142, 34 seconds behind the London
Training Center’s winning mark. The Bruins’ next
regatta is at the Head of the Lake on Nov. 14 in Seattle, Wash. and
their regular season begins in March.
WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL: Senior libero
Chrissie Zartman was named Pac-10 player of the week Monday, coming
off a weekend in which she posted a total of 39 digs against the
Oregon schools. She became the conference’s all-time digs
leader with 1,708 and is the first defensive player to win the
award.
MEN’S BASKETBALL: UCLA coach Ben Howland
and legendary coach John Wooden will host a coaching clinic
together at Pauley Pavilion on Nov. 6. The event runs from 10:30
a.m.”“ 4:00 p.m. and costs $30 per coach.
MEN’S VOLLEYBALL: UCLA will begin
competition at the Dino Tournament tomorrow. The tournament, held
in Calgary, also features the University of Calgary, University of
Saskatchewan and York University. The Bruins will play Calgary
Thursday night, and then Saskatchewan and York Friday afternoon.
Bronze and gold medal matches will be held Saturday evening.
