Churches’ campaign against Wal-Mart
upsetting
ROSEMEAD “”mdash; Parishioners have complained to
the Archdiocese of Los Angeles because priests and nuns are
organizing opposition forces against a proposed Wal-Mart
Supercenter. Five parishioners at St. Anthony’s and San
Gabriel Mission churches ““ both in San Gabriel ““ said
in a letter to Cardinal Roger Mahony that the churches violated
their tax-exempt status by organizing a political campaign against
Wal-Mart. “˜”˜As members of St. Anthony and Mission San
Gabriel parishes, we want to express our profound disappointment
and opposition to the blatant political organizing being conducted
by the priests and nuns at our churches,” read the
letter obtained by the San Gabriel Valley Tribune.

Pomona tattoo parlors placed on moratorium
POMONA “”mdash; The City Council is making it tough for tattoo
parlor businesses. Last week, the council voted unanimously for a
45-day moratorium on tattoo parlors and related facilities in an
effort to give city administrators time to establish health
regulations for such businesses. It was the latest blow for John
Galvan, who has tried to open a tattoo shop in Pomona for eight
months. He’s already leased the space in a shopping center.
“˜”˜It’s such a hard thing,” he said.
Although Los Angeles County has an ordinance regulating tattoo
shops, it only covers establishments in unincorporated county
areas.
