FONTANA “”mdash; A teenager pleaded guilty in the shooting death
of a man at a bank ATM and stealing the victim’s 2003 GMC
Yukon sport utility vehicle.
Jesse Michael Casillas, 19, pleaded guilty on Tuesday to
first-degree murder with the use of a gun and carjacking in the
Aug. 30, 2003, killing of Jose Galvez, 40, who was withdrawing
money from the Bank of America ATM at 4 a.m.
The trial was scheduled to start next week.
In exchange for his guilty plea, prosecutors dropped special
circumstances allegations that could have meant Casillas could be
sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. He
will be sentenced Dec. 3 ““ his 20th birthday ““ to 35
years to life in prison.
Moorpark leads community colleges in UC
transfers
MOORPARK “”mdash; For a campus its size, Moorpark College boasts
the leading transfer rate to the University of California
system.
Last school year, 269 graduates moved on to UC campuses, making
it the leading community college of its size in UC transfers,
officials said. It’s also among the top three similar size
colleges to transfer students to the California State University
system.
A total 721 Moorpark College students went on to California
State University campuses. Only Butte College north of Sacramento
and Bakersfield College placed more students in the Cal State
system in the 12,000-15,000-student category. Moorpark College has
14,200 students.
