Incoming freshman Jordan Farmar underwent a procedure yesterday
to repair a broken nose that he sustained while playing in a
basketball pickup game, the Daily News reported. The point guard
out of Taft of Woodland Hills is considered the most highly touted
prospect of Ben Howland’s recruiting class.
FOOTBALL: Former Bruin corner back Matt Ware
has signed a contract with the Philadelphia Eagles and began
training camp with the team on Tuesday. Also, former Bruin Dave
Ball signed a rookie contract with the San Diego Chargers.
WOMEN’S SOCCER: Junior midfielder Jill
Oakes helped lead the U.S. Under-21 Women’s National Team to
a sixth-straight Nordic Cup Championship by defeating Sweden 3-0 in
the finals. Team USA did not yield a goal in any of its four games.
Oakes was one of five starters on the team who was also on Team
USA’s first-place Under-19 World Championships roster in
2002.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL: Ashlee Trebilcock, a
Hart High School standout who has committed to UCLA for the 2005
season, tore a ligament in her left ankle while trying out for the
USA Basketball Junior Olympic team last week in Denver. Trebilcock
told the Daily News that she likely will undergo surgery sometime
next week but is still seeking additional medical opinions to
determine whether the operation is necessary. She is expected to be
out of playing shape for at least three months.
WOMEN’S GOLF: Senior Charlotte Mayorkas
has accepted an invitation to play in the LPGA tour’s Farr
Classic in Ohio as a sponsor’s exemption. Mayorkas led UCLA
to the NCAA team championship in 2004 and finished the season
ranked fourth individually.
DIVING: After finishing sixth in the
three-meter event at the U.S. Diving Senior National Championships,
junior Paige Thompson has been named to the U.S. Diving Senior
National Team. As part of the team, Thompson becomes eligible to
receive invitations to international competitions through U.S.
Diving as well as the qualifying meet for next year’s World
Championships. At last season’s Pac-10 Championships,
Thompson finished fourth in the 3-meter springboard, seventh in the
1-meter springboard, and eighth in the 10-meter platform.
