W. volleyball: Women’s volleyball setter leaves team, will transfer at end of spring quarter

At the end of the 2002 volleyball season, Haley Jorgensborg
received an honorable mention for the Pac-10 Freshman Team and
looked to be on her way to a successful career at UCLA.

But now it appears her success will have to come somewhere
else.

UCLA coach Andy Banachowski confirmed Tuesday that Jorgensborg
has left the team and will not participate in today’s spring
scrimmage. Instead she will transfer after spring quarter.

“She is no longer with the team,” Banachowski said.
“She will consider her options after spring
quarter.”

The move was not especially surprising after Jorgensborg’s
playing time decreased significantly toward the end of the 2003
campaign.

Jorgensborg had been splitting time with current starting setter
junior Krystal McFarland, but her role took a major hit when the
Bruins decided to switch from their 6-2 offense to a traditional
offense with only one setter.

Banachowski did not divulge Jorgensborg’s explanation for
leaving UCLA.

“She did not give us any information on that,”
Banachowski said.

Freshman Tammy Jackson, who redshirted this past year, will be
the No. 2 setter for the upcoming 2004 season.

During the 2003 season, Jorgensborg registered 271 assists and
had 30 or more kills twice. But those statistics paled in
comparison to the 573 assists she had during her 2002 freshman
campaign.

Coming out of high school, Jorgensborg was elected the Los
Angeles Times player of the year as a senior and was highly
recruited to many of the top schools on the West Coast.

But her future with the Bruins seemed bleak, as McFarland is
projected to be the starting senior setter for the 2004 season, and
the Bruins have recruited highly touted 5-foot-9 setter Nellie
Spicer, who has verbally committed for the 2005 season.
