DeAndre Robinson, a 6-foot-5, 175-pound
shooting guard out of Riverside’s King High School, will walk
onto the UCLA men’s basketball team as a freshman, according
to BruinReportOnline.com.

“It’s always been my dream to go to UCLA,”
Robinson told the Web site. “Not only because of the
basketball, but also the academics.

“(UCLA coaches) said they want me to develop, maybe
redshirt a year, get bigger and stronger, and hopefully earn a
scholarship.”

Robinson passed on a chance to play at Princeton and scholarship
offers from schools including Santa Clara and Wyoming.

WOODEN AND JOYNER-KERSEE RECEIVE AWARDS: UCLA
men’s basketball coaching legend John Wooden
and UCLA alumnus and track and field star Jackie
Joyner-Kersee
are among the three recipients of this
year’s Henry P. Iba Citizen Athlete Awards. The other
recipient is Baseball Hall of Fame shortstop Ozzie
Smith.

The trio will receive their awards at the Rotary Club of Tulsa
in Tulsa, Okla. on June 14.

The Henry P. Iba Citizen Athlete Awards are given in recognition
of America’s premier athletes who have excelled in their
sport and have shown through their actions a desire to help
others.

The award is named for Iba, a long-time men’s basketball
coach at Oklahoma State. He is third on the all-time coaching wins
list with 767 and has also coached three U.S. Olympic teams (1964,
68 and 72).

Wooden won 10 NCAA Championships at UCLA over a 12-year span in
which the Bruins’ record was 335-22.

Joyner-Kersee has won six Olympic gold medals, including two in
the heptathlon.
