Police say suspect in Landfair shooting neither UCLA student nor affiliate

Details about a suspect were released Monday regarding an
incident in which one or more shots were fired early Saturday
morning on Landfair Avenue.

University police arrested Rodolfo Contreras, 20, at 1:10 a.m.
Saturday following a party on the 10900 block of Strathmore Drive
that had been broken up earlier that night by police. Police said
he was not a UCLA student, nor was he affiliated with the
university.

Contreras was booked a few hours later by the Los Angeles County
Sheriff’s Department under a felony charge of carrying a
stolen loaded firearm and held under $35,000 bail. According to the
sheriff’s department, he is scheduled to appear in Airport
Court this afternoon.

Based on police and witness accounts, it is unclear how many
shots were fired Saturday. Nancy Greenstein, director of police
community services for UCPD, said she believes one shot was fired.
Students who were in the area during the incident gave indications
otherwise.

Erica Sin, a fourth-year economics student, was walking home to
her Landfair apartment at about 2 a.m. on Saturday and said police
had taped off a half-block segment of Landfair Avenue north of
Strathmore Drive and told her “they were looking for
shells.”

Greenstein said no one was injured in the incident.
