Westwood nightlife hears shots fired; few details available

Shots fired on Landfair Avenue early Saturday morning left
residents and partygoers stunned as police taped off the street to
investigate the incident. It remains unclear whether anyone was
hurt.

University police would not release details about the gunfire
other than the approximate time it occurred. Sergeant Philip
Baguiao declined to comment, citing UCPD policy that refers all
media comments to Director of Police Community Services Nancy
Greenstein, who is usually not in the office on the weekends.

The Westwood atmosphere was still active at the time the shots
were fired, with weekend partygoers and moviegoers returning from a
night out.

Walking home at about 2 a.m., fourth-year economics student
Erica Sin said she couldn’t get to her apartment because
police were restricting access to at least a half-block portion of
Landfair Avenue north of Strathmore Drive.

“They had taped off the street. They said they were
looking for the shells,” she said.

Dustin Dodds, a third-year physiological science student who
lives on the section of Landfair Avenue that police blocked off,
said he and his roommates heard two shots.

“We heard the shots but we didn’t really know what
was going on,” he said. “There were a whole bunch of
cops up and down the street.”
