Bruin digest

The No. 3 UCLA men’s golf team tied for sixth at the
Southern Highlands Collegiate Championship over the weekend.

The tournament was hosted by the Las Vegas Founders and was won
by No. 11 Arizona State, which finished with a 16-under par
848.

The Sun Devils beat No. 1 ranked Florida (14-under par, 850) by
two strokes.

The Bruins posted a 54-hole score of 871 (7-over par) and were
tied with No. 4 Georgia Tech.

Individually, Florida’s Camilo Villegas
won the tournament with an 11-under par 205. He finished one stroke
ahead of Wake Forest’s Bill Haas (10-under
par, 206).

The highest Bruin finisher was senior Travis
Johnson
, who tied for sixth with a 5-under par 211.

UCLA senior John Merrick tied for 22nd among
the 77-player field with a 1-over par 217, and teammate
Steve Conway tied for 32nd with a 6-over 222.

UCLA junior John Poucher tied for 40th at 223,
7-over par, and freshman Peter Campbell rounded at
the Bruin lineup, tied for 57th with an 11-over par 227.

The next event for the Bruins will be the Cal Poly
Intercollegiates from Mar. 24-26, where the UCLA Blue Team will
play.

WOMEN’S WATER POLO: The UCLA
women’s water polo team won a pair of games on Saturday,
beating UC San Diego 11-2 and Princeton 9-8.

In their first game of the day, the Bruins (11-3, 3-1 MPSF) were
led with three goals each from Kristina Kunkel and
Brittany Bowlus, two from Katherine
Belden,
and one each from Kelley Koepp, Jenna
Murphy
and Kacy Kunkel.

The Bruins got a scare in their second game of the day. UCLA was
leading Princeton 9-5, until the Tigers pulled to within one goal
with 32 seconds left.

Kunkel scored three goals and had her second hat trick of the
day. Belden and Molly Cahill each scored two
goals, while Murphy and Bowlus each added a goal.

The Bruins will play Canada, Brazil and New Zealand at the
Rainbow Classic in Hawaii on Mar. 27.
