Charlotte Mayorkas shot a 5-under par 66 as the UCLA
women’s golf team sped out to a 13-stroke first-round lead
Monday at the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge, hosted by Ohio
State in Palos Verdes.
The junior All-American Mayorkas carded five birdies and no
bogeys on the way to taking a four-stroke lead after one round.
“I know Palos Verdes pretty well, and I went out there and
hit a couple stiff,” Mayorkas said. “Being the first
tournament of the season, I was nervous the whole day. I think
I’m still shaking.”
UCLA acquitted itself very well Monday in its first tournament
of the spring season as four Bruins finished in the top 15.
Joining Mayorkas were senior Gina Umeck and sophomore Susie
Mathews, who each carded a 1-over par 73, good for a tie for ninth
place.
Senior Krystal Shearer is tied for 13th after shooting a 2-over
par 74.
Shearer’s 74 rounded out the Bruin scoring, as the team
takes the top four scores from its five players participating in
the team event.
The No. 2 Bruins shot a 2-over par 286 as a team.
Freshman Hannah Jun shot an 80, while senior Bridget Dwyer
carded a 79 playing as an individual.
“This course is playing tough,” Jun said. “For
our team to be two over, that’s just crazy.”
Second round play continues today.
