M. basketball: Notebook

Fey at home in Washington It will be a
homecoming of sorts for sophomore Michael Fey when UCLA heads to
Seattle to face Washington on Saturday. Fey, a Seattle-native and
Olympia resident, expects a large contingent of friends and family
members to be in attendance at Hec Edmundson Pavilion to watch the
Bruins and Huskies square off. The familiar faces won’t just
be in the stands either. Fey has grown up playing against many of
the Washington players in high school and during the summer.
“I know their whole team,” Fey said. “When I was
back home in Seattle last summer, I talked to them a lot. We got
them twice last year ““ at Pauley and at their place.
They’re going to be looking to return the favor.”
Although Fey admits there might be a little more pressure playing
at home, he’s primarily focused on picking up a victory.
“I’ve got friends and family expecting me to do well,
but I’ll try not to do too much,” he said. “I
just want to get a win.”

TAKE IT INSIDE: Since returning to the team in
mid-December, T.J. Cummings has shown no hesitation shooting from
the perimeter. What UCLA coach Ben Howland would like, however, is
to see the senior forward play more with his back to the basket.
“His strength offensively is the 17-foot face-up shot, but
I’d like to see him going to the basket more because
he’s our best foul shooter,” Howland said.
“I’d like to see him get to the line more often.”
Cummings was more active in the paint against Oregon on Sunday,
tallying 12 points and nine rebounds and getting to the free throw
line four times.

MORRISON DOUBTFUL: Guard Brian Morrison told
Howland that he could play prior to the Oregon game, but the UCLA
coach is not so sure. Howland said Morrison, who is suffering from
a left hamstring pull, will travel with the team to Washington this
week, but he is unlikely to play. Instead Morrison will probably
make his return the following week when the Bruins host Arizona
State.

STILL HURTING: Sophomore forward Matt McKinney
is no closer to returning from a fractured bone in his left foot
suffered prior to the season, Howland said Tuesday. McKinney is no
longer wearing a protective boot on his foot, but he is nowhere
close to 100 percent. “I don’t anticipate he’ll
be ready to go anytime soon,” Howland said. “He’s
just getting to where he can start moving around.”
