Willie Davis Frazier, the suspect in the Oct. 5 Kerckhoff Hall
shooting incident, will be arraigned this morning in a Santa Monica
court.
Frazier’s bail was set at $250,000 on Tuesday. He is
charged with one count of assault with a semiautomatic firearm, one
count of assault on a peace officer and one count of removing an
officer’s weapon.
Frazier was supposed to appear in court Tuesday morning to be
arraigned. District Attorney Loren Naiman said Frazier was sent to
the wrong courthouse ““ in downtown Los Angeles ““ and
that Frazier opted to postpone his court date so he could be
arraigned in the correct court today.
Naiman added that Frazier will not be assigned an attorney until
he arrives for his hearing, a common practice regarding public
defenders.
Frazier was shot Oct. 5 in Kerckhoff Hall by UCPD Officer
Terrence Duren, who, according to police reports, encountered
Frazier in the building’s study lounges.
Frazier was allegedly trespassing in the study lounges, where
access is restricted to UCLA students, staff and faculty
members.
A physical altercation reportedly ensued between Frazier and
Duren. Police reports state that Frazier attempted to seize
Duren’s gun, and that Frazier attempted to beat Duren with
the officer’s baton, leading Duren to fire his weapon.
According to the university, there were no eyewitnesses to the
alleged incident.
After the encounter, Frazier was checked into the UCLA Medical
Center under an alias where he stayed for six days under police
guard.
Frazier was transferred from the hospital to the Twin Towers
Correctional Facilities early Sunday morning, and is currently
being held in the facility’s medical ward.
