Men’s water polo downs St. Francis

UCLA men’s water polo beat St. Francis 14-6 in an
exhibition game on Thursday.

Josh Hewko and Michael March each recorded a hat trick for the
No. 5 Bruins. David Pietsch and Grant Zider scored in the first
period to give UCLA a 4-0 lead after one quarter.

Each of the two teams scored three goals in both the second and
third quarters, and the Bruins outscored St. Francis 4-0 in the
fourth quarter.

The Bruins won’t play again until Saturday, Oct. 18 at the
Rose Bowl Aquatic Center against Cal.

SWIMMING AND DIVING: The 2002-2003 Pac-10
Conference Swimming Champions begin their title defense today at
the University of California at Santa Barbara. The Bruin swimming
and diving team kicks off its new season at 1 p.m. with an away
dual meet against UCSB and Oregon State.

UCLA has defeated UCSB 19 straight times, this past year by a
margin of 166-95. The Bruins are 2-0 against the Beavers.

The 2003-2004 swim squad will be led by co-captains Krissy
Tinney and Kristen Lewis.

“Both are great role models in and out of the pool. They
work hard and have been on the honor roll all three years,”
head coach Cyndi Gallagher said of her captains in a press
release.

MEN’S TENNIS: Two UCLA men’s tennis
players are competing in the 2003 Icy Hot/ITA Men’s
All-American Championships in Chattanooga, Tennessee this week.

Yesterday, No. 3 seed Tobias Clemens
defeated Nicholas Monroe of North Carolina, 6-4, 6-1,
before being upset by Michigan’s Michael Rubin, 3-6, 7-6(5),
6-0 in the tournament’s second round.

Chris Lam, the nation’s No. 29 seed, beat No. 15 Richard
Barker of Rice, 6-4, 6-4, in the first round. He then beat
Ante Matijevic of Texas A&M, 7-6(4), 6-3, in the second
round. Lam faces Gabor Zol Pelvo of Auburn today at 10:30
a.m. in the round of 16.

WOMEN’S TENNIS: UCLA sophomore Jackie
Carleton won her first round match against Texas A&M’s
Jessica Roland, 6-1, 6-1, at the Riviera ITA All-American
Women’s Tennis Championships. Carleton will take on
Northwestern’s Christelle Grier in today’s second
round.

In doubles, Carleton and teammate Lauren Fisher won their first
round match against North Carolina’s Kendall Cline and Aniela
Mojzis, 8-3. They will face Marshall’s Jessica Johnson and
Ashley Kroh in the second round today.

WOMEN’S ROWING: Bruin seniors Irene
Condella and Dawn Regan are rowing at the Head of the Port in
Sacramento on Sunday.

They will compete in Women’s Open 2 ““ scheduled for
10:10 a.m.

The course for the Head of the Port stretches 5.7 kilometers and
starts 3 miles west of the RCRC boathouse.

ICE HOCKEY: Thursday’s UCLA game against
USC ended past press time. The Bruins play at Cal State Northridge
today at 8 p.m.
