UCLA is one of 72 universities from across the country that has
been chosen to have Sports Illustrated on Campus included in its
student newspaper.
SI on Campus, a division of Sports Illustrated, focuses strictly
on college athletics and the sports interests of college students.
Sports Illustrated has increasingly had problems competing with
ESPN in younger demographics.
Today’s issue is the fifth SI on Campus has produced. It
is the second to appear in the Daily Bruin.
Previous issues have included stories on things such as the
“Top College Sports Towns” and “100 Things You
Gotta Do Before You Graduate.” The magazine has published
reports on big football games, and what fans do before and after
those games. SI on Campus takes contributions from student
journalists.
“College sports is a 24/7 experience,” SI on Campus
Editor Chris Stone said in a press release. “Yes, it’s
the big game and the big names, and our readers will get plenty of
that in every issue, but it’s also tailgating and
road-tripping and 3 a.m. pickup hoop games in the student rec
center. That’s what our readers are going to receive as
well.
“It’s a fresh approach to college sports coverage
and one which we believe is going to resonate with hardcore and
casual fans alike.”
Lisa Dodd, a freshman softball player at UCLA, appeared in the
“Faces in the Crowd” section of the first issue.
The 28-page insert, scheduled to come out 26 times during the
school year, will appear Thursdays.
